Some Basic Information about Stock Photography
A photographer is said to conduct stock photography by taking pictures of events, people, and objects and then sell these pictures. These photographers are not assigned specifically to take photos but the photographers are taking pictures at their own leisure and pace.
Stock photography is mainly used in printed advertisements, magazines, brochures and websites, and others.
There are various ways to license stock photos, and the more popular are the rights managed and royalty free stock.
Finding Ways To Keep Up With Pictures
In rights managed photography, stock photos are used for licensed specific time and purpose. For example, if an advertiser would need a stock photo for a specific ad campaign, then they use that licensed photo only. The price of the stock photo used will depend on the size used in the ad campaign, and the stock photo’s used will be limited for that ad campaign only.
Why People Think Photography Are A Good Idea
When there is an intention to use the same photo again, the advertiser will have to pay another amount again. Fees could be charged differently if the same stock photo will be used again for another advertisement and depending on the size of the ad campaign again. Stock photography with recurring fees called royalties, could cost high especially with the license under rights managed stock photography. It could cost the limited use of one picture of fees ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
In royalty free stock license, the photographer would allow the advertiser to use the photo multiple times and just pay a license fee once. The limitations in the royalty free stock license are not as restricted as the rights managed photography. An advertiser can use a photo for many times in different ad campaigns, without additional fees and no royalty fees, when a photo is under royalty free stock photography.
Depending on the licensing source and rights given, royalty free stock can be licensed to as low as $50 to a few hundred dollars only.
There is what is called royalty free micro stock photography, which is the most popular forms of stock photography for businesses that are small and web based. For use on websites, these website owners would prefer stock photography because of its minimal costs and the high quality of photos they can choose for their websites. The costs of these stock photos can be licensed to as low as $1 for smaller and web friendly sizes, and up to $3 or $5 for larger prints. At this small cost, advertisers can use the photos multiple times especially these photos are royalty free.
There are some criteria when negotiating under rights managed photography licenses, and these are the length of time used, how the photos will be used, the image size and the quality, and how exclusive is the use.
